Giselle: Whispers of the Schwarzwald

25-27 March 2026

Thomas Dixon Centre – Talbot Theatre, Brisbane

The quintessential Romantic ballet, Giselle, premieres to enchant Brisbane and the Gold Coast this March.

Choreographed by Emrys Goldsworthy, after the original choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot.

A timeless tale of love, betrayal and redemption, Giselle remains one of the greatest works in the classical repertory – a haunting masterpiece of the Romantic era.

In a sunlit village, the innocent peasant girl Giselle falls deeply in love with the charming Loys, unaware that he is in truth the disguised Duke Albrecht, already betrothed to another. When his deception is revealed, heartbreak drives Giselle to madness and death.

Emrys Goldsworthy reimagines the scene with a bold, contemporary vision. An abstract set design by award-winning architect and designer Paul Jones evokes the essence of rural innocence through minimalist forms, shifting planes and evocative lighting—stripping away traditional realism to heighten emotional intimacy. Dancers move with an updated port de bras that seamlessly links augmented classical lines of today: fluid, expansive arm movements that blend Romantic tradition with modern elongation and breath, infusing the storytelling with fresh lyricism and dynamic expressiveness.
Transformed into a Wili – one of the ethereal, vengeful spirits of brides who died before their wedding day – Giselle joins their moonlit ranks in a forest glade.

Experience the breathtaking majesty of Act II, where the Wilis rise in their iconic long white flowing tutus, gliding through moonlit mists with unearthly precision and haunting beauty.

Brisbane Ballet brings this landmark production to life for the first time, with world-class dancers capturing the contrast between earthly passion and supernatural grace. Virtuosic pointe work, exquisite port de bras and atmospheric designs conjure a world of poignant emotion and spectral beauty.
